We are looking for a new Chair of Trustees
As The Huracan Foundation celebrates a decade of transforming lives through football, we are thrilled to announce a unique opportunity to join our mission at a pivotal moment in our journey. We are currently seeking a confident, dynamic, and experienced individual to step into the role of Chair of Trustees, following the departure of our esteemed Chair, Ian Milligan.
A Decade of Impact
As we celebrate reaching the milestone of our first ten years and embark upon the launch of our new strategy, we are looking for a confident, dynamic and experienced leader to join as Chair of our Trustees and help us to help young people around the world to fulfil their potential.
In 2009, The Huracan Foundation founder Henry May formed a Sunday league team in London with a group of his friends, named in honour of his adopted Argentine football team, Club Atlético Huracán, whom he'd begun to support while studying English in South America. Fast forward ten years and The Huracan Foundation, which was set up following the global media attention garnered by that small London football team, has supported 40+ projects in underprivileged communities in 17 countries around the world including Uganda, Nigeria, Nepal, Mexico, and Colombia, led by educators from across the Teach For All network.
This is an exciting time for The Huracan Foundation. In May 2023, as we celebrated our tenth anniversary, we welcomed five new trustees to our Board - a reflection of our ambition to expand our reach, develop our governance and become a globally recognised football and education charity. Our current Chair, Ian Milligan, is stepping down after five years of leading, growing and supporting our work. We are hugely grateful for the solid foundations he has laid and are ready to take our work further.
Behind the scenes we have spent the last nine months building our new strategy which will launch at the end of 2024 with renewed objectives and a shared collective mission to support a diverse range of projects across the globe which improve children's lives through the combination of football and education.
A letter from our current Chair
Thanks for your interest in The Huracan Foundation. Recruiting a new Chair is an opportunity to build on the substantial impact this charity has already made but to help deliver even greater impact in the coming years.
The Huracan Foundation impacts children's education opportunities in particularly disadvantaged and challenging communities around the world. This is delivered by recruiting, funding and supporting local project leaders who are part of the Teach For All network and who use football to inspire these children in their education and in tackling other significant social issues.
With an inspirational backstory stretching from London to Buenos Aires, The Huracan Foundation was founded in 2013 and has supported 40+ projects to date across 17 countries. Last year saw an equal mix of 1,850 girls and boys involved in our 9 projects across India, Mexico, Nigeria and Uganda. The need for support is only growing with over 90 applications received for funding in 2023, and 70 in 2024.
I feel very fortunate to have chaired The Huracan Foundation this past 5 years. It has a collaborative culture across a motivated team and this is reflected in how we operate around the world. Our project leaders and children are a regular source of inspiration and it's a permanent learning environment.
The new Chair of Trustees for The Huracan Foundation is ultimately responsible for strong governance and leading a high quality team of trustees with backgrounds in education, research, sport, journalism, diversity & inclusion, media and sport for good. The charity will benefit from your experience, talents, network and outlook as it looks to grow its impact and develop as an organisation.
If you are a team player, ready to make a difference to children's lives around the world and help lead The Huracan Foundation to the next level, we would love to meet you.
Best wishes
Ian Milligan,
Outgoing Chair of Trustees
About the role
With a refreshed Board of Trustees and our new 2024-2029 Changing Worlds strategy, The Huracan Foundation is looking for a new Chair to lead our vision, drive our strategy and check and challenge our work while ensuring we fulfil our charitable responsibilities and maintain the highest standards of governance and integrity.
Our work is ambitious and challenging - with a small team of two dedicated part-time employees supported by nine passionate trustees, our new Chair will not only support our people but also help us improve our structure and programme delivery in order that we can not only meet our goals but exceed them.
We are seeking an individual with a clear understanding of the voluntary sector, the opportunities presented to and the challenges faced by small charities, and the complexities of working in a global context. Previous experience of trusteeships is preferable but not essential. The right candidate will have an eye for detail and the skillset needed to lead a small, driven team.
Key responsibilities
Provide leadership to the Board of Trustees and ensure they fulfil their duties and responsibilities
Ensure our governance is fit for purpose and that we are fulfilling our responsibilities to The Charity Commission
Support our small team to deliver our ambitious new strategy
Champion the work of the charity with potential funders and partners, playing an active role in fundraising strategies, partnerships and events
Oversee the delivery of our global projects and ensure our project leaders are provided with the relevant safeguards, resource and support to successfully deliver their programmes of work
Be an ambassador and representative for The Huracan Foundation externally
Chair or delegate the chairing of Board meetings and ensure all actions are executed
Ensure that all relevant stakeholders (e.g. funders, Charity Commission) are provided with timely reports which fulfil any requirements we may have to them
Review as appropriate The Huracan Foundation's structure to ensure effective delivery of our work
Experience
Essential
Experience as a director, trustee or committee member with a commercial, sport for development, voluntary or public sector organisation.
Desirable
A good working knowledge of issues facing children and young people in developing countries
Key information about the role
Our trustees commit to attending between four and six Board meetings a year but recognise that their contributions to The Huracan Foundation’s work go beyond these as they support our small team to review and accelerate the work of our project leaders around the world.
The Chair position term is three years with a maximum of three terms.
All trustee positions are voluntary and are not remunerated. Reasonable expenses will be reimbursed.
Many of our trustees and employees are based in the UK but as a global charity we welcome applications from individuals anywhere around the world.
