Huracan FC Abeokuta Nigeria

The unique Impact Metric Measurement model.

Project impact metric improvement target

At Huracán FC Abeokuta-Nigeria, our mission is to equip young people in low-income Nigerian communities with academic, leadership, and enterprise skills relevant for the 21st century. Our project is based on a unique Impact Metric Measurement model that allows us to measure and scale the impact and sustainability of our actions.

Huracán FC Abeokuta-Nigeria has used its unique impact matrix model to assess the impact and academic results on its members from January to April 2023. Numeracy skills have increased from 11% in the first month to 37%, with a dip to 24% in March, and currently stand at 57% at the end of April. Meanwhile, literacy has increased from 27%, dipped to 16% before rising to 40% in March, and reached 43% by the end of April.

Activity Plan to Achieve this Target

  • Development of weekly assignment worksheets in literacy and numeracy.

  • Weekly visitation to members' homes/skill acquisition training centers to collate progress reports.

  • Admission of new members into the project.

  • Collaboration with like-minded organizations that share our passion for transforming communities through sports.

Measurement of Results:

Academic Results:

Regarding academic outcomes, we use the following measurement formula:

SCORES OBTAINED / TOTAL SCORES X 100/1 = AVERAGE SCORE

Non-Academic Results:

To measure non-academic results, we use surveys and questionnaires. Through this model, our targets include a 90% promotion rate, having 4 out of every 5 children in school, and having 70% of our members involved in skill acquisition become masters of the skills learned.

Impact of the Project So Far

In the first half of the year, Huracán FC Abeokuta-Nigeria has made significant strides in bridging the gaps of educational and social inequities.

According to our unique impact matrix model, we have increased literacy by 43% and numeracy by 57%.

Currently, we are training 30 members in vocational skill acquisition programs, fostering community bonds, and providing a safe space for every young person in our communities.

Child Case Study

Alice, a 14-year-old striker and captain of the Huracán FC Girls Team, is in primary 4 and lives with her grandmother in the Ita-Iyalode community in Abeokuta, Nigeria.

Through the skill acquisition program at Huracán FC Abeokuta Nigeria, Alice is learning tailoring.

Upon completing the training, Alice will have the opportunity to create wealth for herself, support her grandmother, and attend school regularly.

New Partnerships Built

Huracán FC Abeokuta-Nigeria has established and continues to improve integration with major stakeholders such as community leaders and school administrations.

In April 2023, Huracán FC Abeokuta-Nigeria was selected as one of the top 20 innovative projects by Teach for Nigeria for the 2nd edition of the Teach for Nigeria Incubation Hub Program, with an opportunity to pitch for a 1 million Naira seed funding grant by June 2023.

Currently, Huracán FC Abeokuta-Nigeria is engaging with Ride for Freedom (a UK-based charity) and other similar organizations for partnerships and support.

Words from Project Leader, Etim-Etim

“The Huracán Foundation, through my project (HURACÁN FC ABEOKUTA-NIGERIA), has brought me closer to achieving my dreams of bridging the gaps of educational inequities and social injustices in my country. The project has given me the opportunity to weave my community and become a major change driver. I am genuinely grateful and indebted to the THF team and my fellow project leaders for their support during the first half of my project. As I move into the second half of my project, I have reflected and adjusted my tactics and training, made the necessary substitutions to achieve a resounding victory: to see 'every Nigerian child having the opportunity to receive excellent education'.”
