Can you help keep more Huracan girls in school in 2022?

We know that the last two years have been particularly challenging for the girls in our Huracan communities - in particular our Project Leaders tell us repeatedly about the shocking numbers of school age girls that have fallen pregnant during the school closures. So we are kicking off 2022 with a real focus on the girls in each of our projects and we would love your support to make 2022 a much brighter one for each and every one of them. We really hope that this year our projects will be the catalyst and the impetus to ensure that the girls in our communities do return to the classroom when their schools re-open and give them the equal chance they deserve to access education.

We are committed to changing worlds through the power of football and we know that our Huracan Foundation projects really can help to play a lasting role in changing attitudes and mindsets in their communities. Through all of our projects, we aim to improve both the children’s attendance and performance in school, alongside tackling social issues that are specific to the local community such as improving opportunities for girls and reducing gender inequalities,

The global pandemic has heighted these gender inequality issues even further and that is why in 2022, our four new project leads will be focused on using football to make a real difference to girls' lives in remote communities across Uganda and India.

"By mid-2021, the situation was almost out of hand with pregnancy rates running at 80% amongst school aged girls, many girls force to marry by their parents and thousands sexually abused." Charles Obore, Project Leader, Huracan FC Teso Uganda.

“Since March 2020 when the Government announced a lockdown, over 27 girls across my school and community have fallen pregnant.” Andrew Magero, Huracan FC Isikiro Uganda

We want to make 2022 a year to look forward to for many girls who have not attended school regularly since March 2020. It is also the reason why our first fundraiser is focused on raising funds to provide girls with the kit they need to play and sanitary products they need to attend training sessions. The three projects in Uganda all focus primarily on using football to reduce school dropouts and increase school attendance levels. And all Project Leads will be looking to reduce teenage pregnancies and child marriages; as well as addressing mental health issues.

“A girls’ football team is beneficial for not only the girls themselves but the school and the community. It will boost self-esteem, reduce dropout rates and provide the community with a team they can be proud of. We know when given the opportunity, women can do anything.”
Denise Mirembe, Project Leader, Huracan FC Kanyabwina Uganda

Many of our previous Project Leaders have set up the first girls’ football team at their school and achieved great success - you can read more about our previous projects in Nepal and Peru here. Most recently, we are extremely proud of Huracan FC Teso Uganda, who against all the odds, reached the final of the North East Region’s Football Association Women’s Championship! All of the girls played extremely well throughout the tournament, beating teams with much more experience than them and were given the nickname ‘Little Giants’!

“We achieved so much in the tournament besides just being second and having an MVP in our team, we made a name for our team and community in the region, we made our parents proud, we made our goals, dreams look real, we made the impossible possible.” Charles Obore, Project Leader, Huracan FC Teso Uganda.

Just a small donation will make a big difference. With your help these girls will be able to make the impossible possible. Thank you in advance for supporting them here.
